Ten Choices I'm Happy
I Made In Our Apartment

When I first started renovating, I thought every mistake had to be corrected immediately—sometimes regardless of cost or effort. But over time, I’ve learned that not every misstep is a disaster. Some flaws are relatively easy to fix, like repainting a room. But others have taught me to pause and think: Is this something that truly needs fixing, or can I live with it and move on? Here are some examples of mistakes I made on this last renovation and how I've decided to deal with them - live with or move on!

  1.  Moving  the Kitchen to the Salon

By moving the kitchen from the back office and placing it in the salon, we turned it into a lively, functional and attractive  central hub. Cooking becames part of the conversation, and the light floods in from all the windows. Why it works: It honors the Parisian tradition of blending beauty and function, and makes entertaining feel effortless.

2. Replacing All the Windows

We chose to insulate the entire apartment and replace all the windows with quality wooden frames and double panes.  The light softened, the views sharpened, and the space is completely quiet when the windows are closed.  Why it works: It preserves the rhythm of the façade while dramatically improves comfort and ambiance.

3. Investing in Beautiful Hardware

I chose every handle, knob, and latch with care, even sourcing some 19th century brass handles for the French doors. These tactile details elevate the everyday and add a layer of quiet luxury. Why it works: I’m a hardware junkie and think of hardware as the jewelry for the home.  And I just love the way it feels to grip solid brass – like a strong and meaningful handshake!

4. Chosing an Indestructible Kitchen Material

I selected a surface that could handle heat, spills, and time—without compromising style.
Why it works: It allows the kitchen to be lived in fully, without the anxiety of wear and tear. I’m delighted that Monsieur is now the main cook and my kitchen is ready for him!

5. Replacing the Floors with Herringbone

I installed herringbone floors that instantly added character and continuity. They’re light, airy and timeless, like they had always belonged. Why it works: It’s a classic Parisian gesture that elevates every room, even barefoot.

6. Budgeting for Finishes

I used Ikea for closet interiors but splurged on custom doors, moldings and finishes. It was a strategic way to balance cost and quality. Why it works: It balances practicality with polish, proving that luxury isn’t about cost—it’s about where I place my attention.

7. Creating an Office Niche That Doubles as a TV “Screen”

I carved out a small office nook that also serves as a backdrop for the TV. It’s discreet, functional, and elegant. Why it works: It’s a reminder that small spaces do big things – and it always puts a smile on my face.

8. Investing in Furnishings I Loved

I chose pieces that spoke to me—like the dining table, chandelier, and art. They brought soul and story into the space. Why it works: These are the elements that make the apartment mine. They tell my story, not someone else’s.

9. Installing Jib Doors to Expand the Space Visually

I added jib doors to create seamless transitions and visual flow. The apartment feels larger and more serene. Why it works: They’re architectural sleight-of-hand—quiet, clever, and undeniably chic. And it’s always fun to see people’s expressions when they see me walk through a closet!

10. Replacing the Front Door with a Safety Metal One

& Added Molding

I resisted this very expensive upgrade but relented to the urgings of fellow Parisians, who told me we would feel safer, especially when away.  We blended the molding with the door so you wouldn’t know it was metal. Why it works: It’s the perfect example of form meeting function—and I can sleep better at night!

In the end, renovation is as much about making thoughtful choices and investing in what’s important as it is about adapting—and often, it’s the imperfections that give a space its soul (or so we've been known to tell our clients!).
